This is my basic do it yourself refugium I built. I had three custom pieces of glass cut at a local glass shop instead of using arcylic lexan from home depo.

I'm using the same 35G tank (or plan to) but I want a refugium. I've looked at a lot of others designed, read a bit etc. and I came up with this, as my first draft:

A DIY refugium like this will allow you to have all the functioning parts at a fraction of the cost. This refugium was assembled using a spare 10 gallon tank, some cut glass, pumps and 100% silicone. A deep sand bed being integral to this type of filtration has been provided after some baffles to help in settling particles out of the water.

The larger the refugium, the better. The smallest sensible size is 20% of the aquarium volume. I know of cases where the refugium had the same volume as the aquarium, or was even larger than the main aquarium. I recommend Chaetomorpha or chaeto. They grow fast, but do not grow sexually like Caulerpa sp. (which can cause problems in the aquarium).

Cut a hole for the bulkhead on the side you want the water pumped into the Refugium. I used a 1/2" bulkhead, I think the size works better for the smaller size of this container. Install the bulkhead using teflon tape for a nice, tight seal. I used an elbow coming out of the bulkead and attached clear hose to that.
